Rumor has it that one of the major labels is going to release some unprotected (yet watermarked) MP3s into the wild, and then are going to study what percentage of the illegally traded content was from digital downloads versus pure-and-simple CD ripping. What I would expect to see is that the vast majority of pirated material is actually coming off of the CD sources themselves - if the labels realize that as well, then this may be what starts the DRMless trials in earnest.
It will be fun to watch....
